Personal Statement Workshop : Year 12 Begin Their UCAS Application Journey

Friday 22 March 2024

On Thursday 21 March, Year 12 came together in the Bellman Sixth Form Centre for an informative workshop about crafting their personal statements. Leading the session, Mr Fox, Head of Sixth Form, explained what a personal statement is, and how it contributes to a student's application to UCAS - alongside their predicted grades and the School's reference. Students learned how to make their personal statements positive, pertinent and persuasive - the three Ps, and gained an understanding of the pitfalls to avoid, such as including over-used quotes, clichés and AI generated content.

Mr Fox also explained how each student would be supported at Queenswood as they write their personal statements and the timeline for completion over the coming months. He also suggested a number of ways that students can gain experience relevant to their chosen degree course and how they can provide evidence within their personal statement of both their commitment to the subject and why the universities they are applying to should offer them a place over another candidate.

During the workshop, the students were also addressed by Year 13 pupil Tia N, who recounted her personal experience applying for an apprenticeship in the banking sector. After a fiercely competetive selection process, Tia has been succesful in her application to Societe Generale Bank, a European leader in the financial markets.

If students have any questions about their personal statements and the content covered at the workshop, they should contact Mr Fox or Miss Greensmith.
